English as an Additional Language (EAL) for 1st to 10th Grades
Grades 1 to 10
The school's EAL programme is designed to help students whose native language is not English. The EAL programme is structured around two principles based on research findings:
- children learn languages most effectively through immersion
- children's native language skills influence their rate of learning and proficiency in a second language.
During the school day, EAL children are immersed in regular classrooms and supported by specially trained teachers, who ensure the most effective learning strategies are in place to deliver individual success. There is a clear focus on each student's ability to acquire basic vocabulary, and vocabulary relevant to classroom topics.
Grades 11 and 12
Although students entering the final two years of High School are expected to have a good standard of English, support is provided for students who need extra support to fully master Academic English.
Native Language Enrichment (NLE) Grades 1 to 10
ACS Egham encourages all students to maintain their native language proficiency, as we know it helps their acquisition of additional languages. The school offers a dynamic NLE programme, and the languages offered each year reflect the major nationality groups in the school.
The school financially supports this programme through after-school or elective classes – providing there are sufficient students numbers. Parents of students whose language is not offered in the NLE programme are welcome to contact the NLE Head of Department for a list of recommended private instructors.
IB Diploma Programme – Mother Tongue Support
The school financially supports this programme providing there are sufficient students (2 or more, and with the agreement of the Head of School) for each language. Examples of languages that have been offered include: Dutch, German, Spanish, Danish and Korean.
NTC Nobel - Dutch School
Located at and supported by ACS Egham, NTC Nobel provides Dutch language and culture education for Dutch and Flemish students in grade 1-8. NTC Nobel follows the Dutch educational curriculum and is officially accredited by the Dutch government. Our aim is to provide a seamless transition into the Dutch school system for students when moving (back) to The Netherlands. In addition, it is also a thorough preparation for students planning to do Dutch as an IB subject. NTC Nobel uses up-to-date educational materials and standardised tests. The lessons are taught on a weekly basis after school for 2.5 hours. Next to language we also pay attention to the Dutch and Flemish culture and celebrations through e.g. culture projects, Dutch movie nights and celebration of Koningsdag.
